When Do Christmas Shoppers Start Researching?

When we ask business owners when their Christmas marketing starts, it’s quite often we hear “December” or “Black Friday”. But when do Christmas shoppers start researching? In general, it’s much earlier than that.

A new PayPal-commissioned poll found 45% of Brits plan to start their Christmas shopping by the end of October, and around half use the internet to research products and compare prices.

That leaves a gap most businesses fall straight into. They publish for the buying moment and miss the deciding moment, when shoppers are building shortlists and comparing options. A well-timed content marketing plan closes that gap.

The Lowdown

  • Nearly half of UK shoppers plan to start their Christmas shopping by the end of October.
  • Around half research products and compare prices online before they buy.
  • Most shoppers already have a gift idea in mind before they search, so the deciding happens early.
  • Gift guides and comparison content belong in October, with seasonal landing pages live before Black Friday.
  • Running late is fixable if you get one strong piece of content live this week.

When Do Christmas Shoppers Start Researching, and Why So Early?

The PayPal poll shows how much happens early. 51% of Brits use the internet to research products, 52% go online to compare prices and 61% expect to have started their Christmas shopping by Black Friday.

Last year’s behaviour backs it up. YouGov’s Big Survey on Christmas shows that almost a quarter of present buyers typically start in October or earlier, and two-thirds have started by the end of November.

AI is changing research too, with 35% of Brits using or planning to use it for festive shopping. AI assistants can only recommend what they can find, so clear content needs to be live early.

The Deciding Moment vs the Buying Moment

Most small businesses time festive content for when people buy: a gift guide plonked live in early December and ads switched on for the final fortnight. The thing is that, by then, much of the deciding has happened.

Research from Klaviyo tells us that 69% of UK shoppers usually have a gift idea in mind before they start searching. That idea came from somewhere: a gift guide, a comparison post or a something they saw weeks earlier on social media. If it wasn’t yours, then the only way you’re able to compete is through price.

There’s a techy reason to publish early too.

New pages take time for Google to crawl, index and rank, so a page published in December may not be found until the moment has passed. Seasonal SEO works best when it’s planned well ahead.

Who Starts Their Christmas Shopping First?

It’s probably not a surprise that the clearest split in the data is between women and men.

In the PayPal poll, 53% of women plan to start by the end of October, compared with 35% of men. YouGov found the same pattern: 35% of women begin in October or earlier, against 12% of men, and men are far more likely to leave it until the second half of December.

If your customers skew female, get your research content live sooner. If your buyers are mostly men, keep your December content sharp.

So When Should Your Gift Guide Go Live?

Early November: Get Your Research Content Live

Gift guides, “best X for Y” roundups, buying guides and comparison pages. This is when shortlists form. Refresh last year’s versions rather than starting from scratch, so you keep the search visibility they’ve already earned.

Late November: Build Seasonal Landing Pages

Create dedicated Christmas landing pages for your key products or services, ready before your Google Ads go live. Give clear, direct answers to common questions so your content has a chance of showing up in AI Overviews and assistants, which is where AI search optimisation comes in.

Early December: Switch to Conversion

Black Friday is at the end of November, and 61% of shoppers expect to have started by then. Tighten your calls to action, test your offers and make checkout painless.

Mid-December: Create Urgency, Then Plan for the Sales

YouGov found the typical shopper finishes in the second week of December, and 42% are still buying after 15 December. Last order dates, delivery cut-offs and gift cards earn their keep here. Then plan your post-Christmas push, because studies show that Christmas Day is the most popular time to buy gifts at a discount (49%), ahead of Black Friday (44%).

FAQs

When do Christmas shoppers start researching?

Many UK shoppers start researching Christmas purchases in October. A 2026 PayPal-commissioned poll found 45% of Brits plan to start their Christmas shopping by the end of October, and around half research products online first. For SMEs, that makes October and early November the window when shortlists are being built.

When should I publish my Christmas gift guide?

Aim to have your gift guide live by mid October. That gives search engines time to rank it before shoppers start comparing. If you’re running late, publish now and push it through email and social while it builds visibility.

How far in advance should I plan Christmas marketing?

Start planning in late summer so your content is ready to go live in early October. That leaves time to review last year’s results, refresh existing pages and build landing pages. Then shift your focus to conversions in November and urgency in December.

Do I need a separate Christmas landing page?

Usually, yes. A dedicated seasonal page matches your message to festive search intent and gives paid traffic somewhere focused to land. Sending Christmas ads to your homepage makes shoppers hunt for what they came for, which costs you conversions.
