Social Media Trends 2026: What Have We Learned So Far?

The 2026 social media trend lists have been piling up for a while now. But what are the big shifts that are making a difference for UK small businesses juggling limited hours and even more limited budgets?

We reckon that there are three key changes that have made a big difference this year: social search taking a real bite out of Google’s grip on younger customers, short-form video doubling down on its chokehold on the attention economy and LinkedIn seeing a bit of a behind-the-scenes resurgence.

If you’re managing your own social media marketing in-house or weighing up social media ads for the first time, this is where to point your energy this year.

The Lowdown

  • Social search is genuinely eating into Google’s grip on younger customers.
  • Short-form video still gets more attention than any other content format.
  • LinkedIn rewards real expertise again, not just posting for the sake of it.
  • Chasing every new platform is the fastest way to be mediocre on all of them.
  • Three channels done properly beat six done badly, every time.

Is Social Search Replacing Google for Younger Audiences?

Partly, yes. And the shift already shows up in the numbers. Sprout Social’s Q2 2025 Pulse Survey, which polled over 2,200 social media users across the UK, US and Australia, found that 41% of Gen Z now turn to social platforms first when they want information, overtaking traditional search engines at 32%.

Separate research from Hootsuite puts a number on the habit itself: roughly two in five Gen Z shoppers have used TikTok as a search bar, typing questions into it the way older audiences would type into Google.

So Google hasn’t been replaced outright, but for a whole generation of customers it’s not the automatic first stop anymore.

For a UK small business, this changes where your content needs to live.

A well-optimised website still matters hugely, and that’s not going anywhere, but the businesses winning attention right now are also showing up inside the platforms people already have open, with content written to answer a question rather than sell a service.

Our page on AI Search Optimisation covers how the same shift is playing out on the Google side of things too.

What Should Small Businesses Post on Social Media in 2026?

Short-Form Video Still Owns the Scroll

Ofcom’s Online Nation report, published in December 2025, found that TikTok now reaches 46% of UK smartphone-using adults, rising to 65% among 18- to 34-year-olds.

YouTube is still the biggest platform overall, and it reaches the vast majority of UK adults for around 51 minutes a day on average. The videos that work are quick, useful and a little rough around the edges: a founder explaining a decision, a two-minute product demo, a customer being shown around a finished job.

A smart social media marketer with a smartphone and fifteen minutes can outproduce a business ten times their size, provided you show up consistently rather than in occasional bursts.

LinkedIn Is Carrying B2B Trust

If your customers are other businesses, LinkedIn earned its place back this year. The Content Marketing Institute’s 2026 B2B research, surveying over a thousand marketers, found that LinkedIn is the most effective channel for building thought leadership; it was chosen by 76% of B2B marketers, well ahead of email newsletters and webinars.

The posts that work generally aren’t corporate announcements anymore. They’re specific opinions from a real person at the business, backed by an example, published consistently rather than in one big push. Pair that with a proper content marketing plan and you’ve got a channel that builds real credibility.

Be Consistent With Which Social Media Trends You Choose to Capitalise On

One of the key things to remember is that plenty of trends won’t make this list, and that’s deliberate. Chasing every new feature, from disappearing posts to AI filters to whatever platform launches next month, spreads your time thin without moving a single metric that matters.

A clear marketing strategy that names your actual audience and picks two or three channels to do properly will outperform a scattergun approach every time, and it’ll cost you a lot less stress along the way.

FAQs

Is social search replacing Google for younger audiences?

Not entirely, but it’s taking a real share of it. Recent research shows a substantial proportion of Gen Z now search social platforms before a traditional search engine, particularly for product recommendations and reviews. Google remains dominant overall, but ignoring social search means missing where a growing number of future customers start looking.

What social media trends matter for small businesses in 2026?

Three things stand out: social search, short-form video and LinkedIn for B2B audiences. Businesses that show up consistently on short-form video and treat LinkedIn as a proper channel, rather than an afterthought, tend to see far better returns than those chasing every new feature that launches.

What should small businesses post on social media in 2026?

Short, useful video content performs best across almost every platform right now, from quick product demos to behind-the-scenes clips. For B2B audiences specifically, first-person posts from real people at the business, backed by a specific opinion or example, consistently outperform corporate announcements.

Do small businesses need to be on every social platform?

No. Spreading effort across every platform usually means doing all of them badly. Picking two or three channels where actual customers spend time, and posting there consistently, produces far better results than trying to maintain a presence everywhere at once.
